The included ac adapter does have a power bricktransformer but the transformer brick is located midway down the power cable not at the plug

The switch on the side of the hub controls both power and data so if the switch is in the off position nothing plugged into the hub will be able to connect to your computer even if the computer is properly connected to the hub

When plugged into ac power the hub can power usb devices even if the hub isnt connected to a computer

The reason i wanted top slots is for the ease of inserting usb drives you can simply push down on the drive instead of holding the unit steady to insert the drive to the side
