Pros & Cons
Pros
These earphones are absolutely astounding - worth every penny. Most people will balk at the pricetag, but they are worth it.
Sennheiser cx300-b considerably more compact and somewhat less expensive than the pxc 300, these are also quite good. E4c consume bigger power than most of the small headphone out there.
I'm an audiophile/musician/snob. I'm immersed in wondering sounds and enjoying my mp3's like never before. All of my music has new life, with all of the instruments and vocals balancing perfectly.
It is somewhat of a pain to have to roll up the cord manually when putting it away and untangle it when taking it out. To reduce microphonics (picking up sound from the cords bumping against things), wrap the cords up over the front and top of your ea... Read More
Cons
The bass on these is almost nonexistent. I think these are very overrated and overpriced for what they deliver.
The only reason these earphones are noise cancelling is because they're jammed up ur ear halfway to ur brain. The cable makes so much noise, it makes the headphones almost unsuable. The buds that came with my ipod sound better.

Sure the ipod is an ingenius little device but looking cool doesnt have anything to do with the quality of the sound
Ive only been able to listen to solo piano music with the volume full up
Price
However for the frequent traveler where cost is of little import compared to size weight and quality then the e4cs are well worth it
I got these earphones as a gift for my birthday so price was known to me until i looked them up on amazon
I just amortize cost over two years instead of one
To sum up given that market price is generally similar my recommendation is generally for the shures but for those who fly alot... Read More

The shures however sound as though they have even greater resolution of detail and have a flatter frequency response

In comparison the etymotics have a sound that is a little tipped up and can become fatiguing

There is a comparative lack of depth to their sound and there is much information in the midrange in particular that is lost
