I've been known to go on long hikes and even backpacking by myself. It's a lot bigger than my old garmin etrex, but it also lets me communicate. Good accuracy, battery life is adequate for day trips.
It is very slow at calculating street routes and the route guidance is probably 15 years behind what google maps or any other app is doing.
The backlight is so poor i kept having to take it out of the cradle and hold it out in the sunlight. Surely this is to conserve battery but there has to be a better way. It hangs and i had to reset several times.
This one boggles my mind. It gives me the functionality i need, and the price is right. It works after some time invested in figuring out what the pdf so inefficiently does not detail.
This unit compares to the ease of use and simplicity of the milspec units i used in my previous life. Needless to say, the primary use of a gps device is to get where we are going.
Etrex 22x has all the basic features/functions needed for general navigation. Can be used for automotive navigation. One is mainly for cycling, and another one is this etrex22x which mainly for hiking.
This works very well, is intuitive, and i can see the screen in the field. The layout is simple to set up and probably contributes to the extensive battery life.
Grew up navigating with the map and compass. It's helpful to compare information on several maps while backpacking. The green, detailed topographic maps are available for an additional cost.
It is far from intuitive. Forget about backtracking. It renders looking up locations outside of your immediate area impossible.
Garmin is an abysmally disappointing company. It's shocking that the company whose business this is can't do this. The begging and customer service really not be able to help at all.
