The adhesive is awful and the tape is very thin paper. There is a gap between each 12 inch section, which is an added annoyance. The gap causes inaccurate measurements.

However for some reason i can’t imagine the tape end starts at 12 inches and not 1

But if you want to start taping at 0 and cut at 6 inches you’re going to have to spread the tape out to 6 cut and then align it and apply it the way you want it
