But because they are coiled for packing the ends are curled up when the greengray side is up and no matter how long i place heavy books on the ends they will not lay flat

I probably would not use the back side as it is pretty plain with tan background and some green lines in a grid type pattern

My tiles are 16 square so you can get an idea of the size of the mat by looking at my pictures

As others mentioned the curl is hard to get out if you want the colorful side to show immediately
