Both my fans are very quiet, and remain so whichever direction they are oriented in. Hunted around ebay and online for a similar specification of fan and came across these on amazon. Almost silent, using to keep inverter cool in motorhome.

The stand isnt ancient but its old enough that i couldnt call in warranty or anything

A little research ie a screwdriver was called into service found that the fan unit itself could be removed and was selfcontained

The wiring was going to be a problem

The fans as supplied have standard plugs that enable them to be plugged into standard sockets not an option for me

It was obviously a bit of a punt if either had turned out to be faulty i wasnt going to be able to return them for replacement

But i cant really suggest you follow my example unless youre very sure of yourself and im not going to tell you what sort of laptop stand it is either just in case it turns out that you read this as a recommended repair process
