As far as i can tell the live side is the side that says alfa

At long distance turning the antenna around 180 degrees causes loss of signal so it would seem that the alfa label side is the side that should face the enemy

I had problems with that not giving me a power signal reading and when it did it was 2 to 56 except it was getting the data just fine

That may be that the n standard intentionally varies and as such does not hog a shared signal

Anyway i put the 1 watt model outside not caring if it could log on to the rather distant public wifi but just get a reading of signal strength

It has some a little rejection of signals behind it but not much
