Pros

The author of this book, and most other present day civil war historians identify the cause of the civil war as slavery. It is important to understand from the outset that the cause was slavery.

From the american civil war; a history from begining to end hourly history. It puts the war in perspective without getting bogged down in dates places and names. True this work is a summation of the american civil war, and one can argue much is omitte...  Read More

The civil war as a theological crisis by mark noll. State's rights are still a debatable issue. The existence of racism today is on point.

So much nuance and complexity were overlooked. I have several and enjoy putting an hour into subjects that need condensing in a busy life.

An accurate portrayal is to be appreciated. I feel like this book gave me a foundation to explore in more detail. The fact that now i want to learn more is a compliment to this book.

Cons

The war of northern aggression is full of inaccuracies, preconceived stereotypes, & false assumptions. It is even disrespectful to the southern ladies of the time with its outlandish comments. The closing words referencing rodney king and blm disc...  Read More

As an immigrant american of some years my knowledge of the civil war was limited to the highlights

Definitely not the picture i was given in school history classes

As outlined in this book the cause of the civil war was not states rights taxes or anything else

It was not even about slavery as it existed at the time although that ties in but to quote the book the cause of the civil war was not primarily the defense of slavery where it already exited but the protection of the spread of slavey in new and future territories of the united states

Sadrealistically you cant cover the entire cw in a one hour read but it does a fairly good job of hitting the highlights

The chapter on women and blacks role in the war was good

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Ive read several other reviews that downgraded the book to 1 or 2 stars based on this section only

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

The topic has been the subject of multivolume sets so the idea of a short book with a one hour reading almost sounds absurd
