Turns out, it's a usb-c out port, which can charge the laptop - but not send a signal to the monitor.

Unfortunately, the usb-c setup does not work out-of-the-box with my macbook pro 16.

Got this on a special deal for $177.

With my older macbook i had to buy a thunderbolt to hdmi converter which was about $13.
