Quality
The lcd3 has quality build throughout -- from cables to case to headphones.
After the break in, they were markedly improved and became excellent.
It doesn't require the ha-2, has it's own amp (but no dac), and sound cancellation -- features the lcd3 lacks.
Theirs no question their audiophile dream, just don't try and drive them with a ordinary run of mill receiver!
Price
They were $6k at the time and are $10k now.
Crazy price amp but makes the lcd-3 sing!
But for a fraction of that cost, you can get about half way there in terms of the quality of the sound.

I’m grateful but the journey to get here was long and hard.
Competitiveness
I can't say how they compare to other headphones in the same price bracket, but i'm certainly very happy that i bought them.
They prize is pretty hefty and i am not sure whether they too pricey, there may be other similar choices in the marker with equal quality.

In addition, they are to be used at home, and you'll need different headphones for commuting.

The size of the set is large and they are a little on the heavy side so they can be tiresome after long use

I’m also impressed with the sound right out of the box however i will update with more detail after they have had a few days of connstant burning in

All the wood leather and metal though end up making them quite heavy especially when compared to say the sennheiser hd800ss which use a lot of plastic

The weight was ultimately a deal breaker for me though and why i ended up returning them
