Pros & Cons

Pros

Audioengine a+ speakers are not perfect if you are an audio snob, but they are less than 1/10th of the cost of my 805's. Bought these for my bedroom system. These speakers are joy to listen to when paired with that preamp.

Highs and midrange are also really crisp. Music sounds alive with clarity and accuracy. The sound is terrific.

Cambridge has the best dac. Audioengine also has a dac, the audioengine d1 24-bit dac. Do you want a dac with a headphone jack or a dac that has more of a historical hi-end audio history?

Cons

The a5+ has a massive heatsink on the back (addressing the problem of overheating common to the a5), but it is insufficient. For the money this is a horrible value and not what i was expecting after all the misplaced rave.

Tone is off (flat), lacks some clarity and, slightly boomy base overrides the music. Ok sound but couldn't get rid of the loud hum/buzzing noise. The sound is very muddy and flat.

The left one has a defect or may be the amplifier circuit is faulty. Plugged the line cable from the headphone jack to the line input of the speaker, no luck. Presumably it is the amplifier that gives in - potentially capacitors reaching end of life?

They still have some decent bass but nothing that's going to shake your walls (or floors) unfortunately, the thing that's very clear once you plug them in is the terribly boomy and muddled bass. Although the a5's provide a healthy low bass, the high r...  Read More

Maybe i have spoiled taste, i have nice audiophile speakers throughout my house. However, it's hard to discern if they are any better at all than my small bose pc speakers.

High quality speakers their good for small to medium sized rooms.

First thing i can say is that i bought these speakers in 2013 and as of writing this review it's now 2024 that' means i had the...  Read More

Bluetooth started to fail after two years.

I spent the better part of six months trying to find a quality bluetooth bookshelf speaker for my andover turntable.

Price

For the money this is a real winner and i recommend it for anyone looking for a bluetooth speaker set upper home, office or.

All around these are a great buy at this price for a mid range audio setup.

I had to spend well over $800 to get something that only approaches it.

If you plan to use them for computer speakers in a near field you could save a bit of money and go for the a2+ set.

Shipping

I messaged audioengine and they had a brand new unit out to me without any questions within a few days.

Packaging/appearance

I also liked that everything you need to get setup is in the box, and the instructions were clear and easy to read.

Upon opening and checking contents i was happy to see they were in fact still new.

You could clearly see where old mailing labels had been cut off of original packaging.

I bought it to use on my desk for monitoring audio samples while editing videos, recording, and listening to music, and there's...  Read More

Competitiveness

My kef speakers for my tv sound much better as do both my sony wireless headphones and my sennheiser wired headphones.

I believe it is pretty well optimized now and my computer speaker system is nearly as good as the bose was.

I've tried many solutions over the years - klipsch, bose, svs and many other brands you've never heard of.

The companion 3 is no longer sold in the us, only the companion 2 is, so i had to look elsewhere.

Unfortunately we had to return ours because the volume adjustment was loosefloppy and we could not tighten the retaining nut

Definitely needs to be paired with a decent subwoofer to get the most out of these

Without one i dont know how anyone can find the overall sound quality acceptableid say youd be far better off buying a less expensive set of computer speakers that includes one or plan to add one later

Music sounds much better in my office than the klipsch cinema 600 i had been listening to from my apple tv which sounds muddy by comparison

I have them off my desk using 2 smallrig selection camera desk mount table stands and just above the wide screen monitor pointed slightly down

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

There is a screw hole on the bottom of each speaker and the stands come with an articulating mount with the correct size screw

Im not sure what weight those stands are rated for but they are holding up
