An update to the venerable uv-5r and it's software-defined radio, this one has multiple ham bands and is not fcc compliant.

These radios are great especially for the price.
All in all, it's a great little radio considering how inexpensive it is.
You get less spurious transmissions, they definitely can't be hacked to go off the amateur bands (yet), that and it is very inexpensive.

Very similar to the older uv-5r version i purchased when i first got licensed years ago.
I think that this chinese-made ham radio, the baofeng gt-5r pro, has the best reliability and features in a ham radio for the price!

I dont like that it doesnt stop on the channel to listen to the full transmission when on the scan option like regular police scanners do so you would have to manually stop or stay on the selected channel

I have done some basic receive testing with these and a few other baofeng radios and the older ones seem to receive better and cleaner than the newer ones

Now it could be something in the settings or it could be something else but with the same antenna in the same spot within a few minutes my older uv5r with the same squelch setting receives better very slightly than these gt5rs

I also discovered the gt5rs don’t like gmrs frequencies but if you program them as uv5rs in chirp they will do gmrs
