Pros & Cons
Pros
The gt-5r is identical to the uv-5r in pretty much every way except for the little nameplate at the bottom. The battery charger works as you would expect it to. The only thing i notice is that with the larger battery, it feels a little loose, but hey ... Read More
Don't underestimate this little $25-$28 guy. It has all of the simplex, duplex, repeater, and dual band features. I recommend it as a first amateur radio for a newly licensed amateur radio operator.
Used chirp to program it. Easy to program once you understand the menu system. I was able to program in 58 of the 128 channels manually.
Cons
The uv-5r is a radio the fcc has railed against in the past, but it's never done more than threaten baofeng. This is the one dud i’ve ever experienced. What a crock.
The faulty squelch performance just about makes this radio useless. It does this by restricting the radio's operational ability to transmitting. Hit a local repeater, same thing.
