Hold the buckle so you are looking down the length of the leather strap there is a thin hinge on the inside of the buckle where the twisted buckle head meets the metal section connected to the belt

Gently wedge the flathead in this seam and twist sideways until it pops open

I had to hold the section together then twist the buckle until it locked in place before it properly grabbed the leather
