I tried putting the zoom lens on the bottom of the bag but then my camera would stick up out of the padding since the zipper slopes down a bit and that made me uncomfortable since i didnt want my camera getting damaged

Maybe it just needed to be broken in but with my trip coming up i didnt want to risk being annoyed for two weeks and missing photo ops struggling to get my camera out
