Well built, sturdy. This isn't texture but the finish raising the grain.

I can only assume that the reviewer has never made or used a mallet with a tapered mortise and tenon construction.
The head isn't glued onto the handle at all, and that's by design.

It does what its supposed to do i did have to smooth over some corners on the handle for my own comfort
