Pros & Cons
Pros
Some reviews seem to indicate this is an insurmountable issue. I remember my mum bought one of these (original) in the late 70's. The breville is excellent and worth the money. Definitely feels more premium.
The breville jaffle maker is a thing of beauty with a gorgeous retro design. Solid metal construction, a pleasure to use and no probs with the non stick like cheapie models.
A dab of japanese mayonnaise on shredded cheese makes the sandwich super melty inside. This makes a nice toasty cheese crust for sandwich.
I just use a splash of vinegar on a cloth and it shines like a new dime. It heats up quickly, browns very nicely and is very easy and quick to clean. Makes them perfect everytime, easy enough to keep clean.
The only shortcoming is that it works best with large sliced bread. If you can't get a large square loaf at a supermarket, then your alternative is to cut suitable sized triangles from a loaf bought at a bread shop--or work something out with the bake... Read More
Cons
This appliance overheats on the outside. What a mess. Product is sold as a classic and is a very expensive $106 classic. Hard to clean and didn't do it for me.

Was a bit tired of the cheap jaffle irons breaking and got this one.
- you can sprinkle cheese on the outside of the butter bread before lowering the top plate onto the sandwich.
You can then use your finger nail to pick off the the plastic remnants.
Competitiveness
Because this works at a higher temperature than the cheaper brands, you can use a variety of breads and pastry.
This is by far the best toastie machine i've had - it's so stylish and sturdy.
I just have to decide what use the paratha offcuts are.
I went through 4 toastie machines in 2 years - then the non-stick surface would get damaged.
