Pros
Print quality is excellent, even on the most economical setting. Double sided printing is pretty easy too. Paper tray holds a decent amount of paper too.
Can reproduce a good gray scale (from what i can see, it has a distinction of about 7 steps - i. It's exactly what i was looking for in a printer) this printer is remarkable in it's simplicity. It is fantastic.
Cons
It continually thinks it is jammed when it is not. Paper jams are inevitable.
The cost of toner cartridges for this printer have skyrocketed in the last few years to the point where it is no longer cost effective. It was used, and missing drum unit and toner cartridge.
Since the hl-2140 was out of stock for replacement i return it. This was not disclosed. Go to you tube and do a search.

Paper feeds nice, fuser works good, resolution is great.
This is my first laser printer and has performed flawlessly for light to moderate home use.
Five solid years of use, right now i print a ream of paper a week for grad school.
This printer does waste print cartridges by stop printing way to early before the cartridge is actually empty.
Price
I bought this printer for $60 in 2009, and it still works perfectly.
I will buy again, price is great also.
Beware of sellers asking this much for what is an oem priced unit of $80.
I bought this printer new for only $59.

Michael was professional and friendly and shipped the part to me gratis anyway.

Competitiveness
Compared to other printers i have had in my life, this has been the most reliable printer.
I never even bought the brother brand toner cartridge, just off brand.
Some fiddling with the software is necessary to shut off the low toner lights, but not as intrusive as most other brands.
It's much faster than a lot of other laser printers i've had to work with.
