They share consumables with the mfc-l basic printer-copiers and and hl-l printers. Central 'works' of the printer includes the four drum unit + toner cartridge sets.
There are no cheating lockout chips which prevent using third party consumables or refilling. See the note at the end about extracting from packing carton.
Cons
Awful quality and functionality for the size the the printer. Firmware is outdated and needs a firmware upgrade. If you expect battery charger, beware.
Fully 17—07-20 & deposed. The seller acts against the law by not following the consumer law and depriving buyers of their statutory rights.
Recurring problems printing smudged cyan and magenta bands. After a windows 10 update, the option to print two-sided only works flipping on the short edge. It continues to be an inconvenient experience each time i print.
Biggest problem seems to be getting replacement toner cartridges for this model. The toner supplied with this is supposed to do 500 colour and/or 1000 black. On a power cycle it checks if third party toner is used and will reject them.

I was fed up with the expense of inkjet cartridges in my previous printer, or that they would dry up when there was low usage.

This is my second brother printer, it is as good as one twice the price i use at the office.

For example a 2page 4 sided a4 document with text and coloured graphics set to scan all 4 sides at 300dpi resolution and produce a multipage pdf file takes about 7 seconds to complete and produces a file of 1047 kb 1
