Pros & Cons
Pros
The author explains in great depth how the human body uses calories or energy in a language that, although very science-y, is easy to read and understand. The methodology forms the basis of most of the book- similarly digestible, careful review of hum... Read More
He breaks down why exercise does not increase the total daily calories burned. To lose weight, one must consume fewer calories than they burn, overall.
I'm more of a psychology guy than a biology guy, but pontzer was able to break down how the body functions in a simple way.
Pontzer is witty and winsome in his writing and i found myself listening to parts of this book as raptly as if i were listening to a mystery novel. There are still a few concepts i may need to go back and revisit, but his overall thesis was easy to gr... Read More
Cons
Author ignores if the hadza are actually healthy and ignores the last part of the book. If you have none of these issues, then the calorie in calorie out formula is more straightforward.
If he had studied and discussed people with multiple body types globally, and the types of food they eat, i think he would have been more credible.
The book is more of a dissertation on evolution than anything actually useful. The greatest flaw is that it is completely different from what is advertised. The author tries to justify why humans evolved to be such freaks of nature--the weird ape.
