A good 1/2 inch is exposed, and i have never had any trouble drinking from the valve.
Because the bite valve is rubbery, it's hard to re-connect it to the tube since it is very flimsy.
The cover itself is pushed all the way up against the 90 degree portion of the tube.
Price
They're already so expensive that you're either going to buy one or you're not; another couple of bucks isn't going to sway your opinion!

The rubbery material of the mouth piece also makes it difficult to clean off without using water to rinse it and a lintfree cloth to wipe it

Not being able to grip the stem of the bite valve because the cover is in the way makes it that much harder
