Before i received it i did not understand how the phone would be grabbed by the device

When you place the phone on the bottom cradle nothing happens until the weight of the phone touches the pad on the back and then it activates an internal motor that moves the side arms in to grab the phone

To release the phone there is a small button on the side to press that reverses the motor and releases the arms and phone
