As for my nine year old who was playing when he was eight i could sense the gears turning in his head as we first played

Like chess the game requires a player to think several moves in advance and prepare for eventualities

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Unlike chess the game generally operates like clockwork with some disruptive randomness thrown in for fun

Every game is kind of like a puzzle to be solved

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

The basic game is lots of fun on its own but know that if you really have the mechanics down and are growing a little bored with it the expansions are there to build on what you already know and create a much more challenging game

A couple of things stood out to me that caused me to compare it to carcassonne which is probably my 1 goto board game right now there is strategy but it tends to be turnbasedshortterm

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

In carcassonne there is often a best play or a selection of best plays and in many game groups people will helpadvise each other on possibilities for placement of tiles but since you dont know what tile youre going to get from turntoturn you cant plan ahead in specifics so much as in terms of a general strategy or plan

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Likewise with this game while you can make some general plans due to some of the randomness of the monster tile draws especially those that change the board more drastically you cant plan too far ahead
