Baofeng uv-5g plus gmrs handheld radio is a major upgrade from the ham radios of a few decades ago. It works with a pretty low swr.
The long 771 nagoya is pretty good for gmrs only frequency.
The price is right with tons of programming options. This is worth every penny. Makes for the perfect gift for survivalist friends and family.

I love the features and the ability i can use it to extend some other things i have (i am a ee/software engineer) and like to build things
The mic sensitivity and speaker quality are plenty adequate.
I have had other radios that just sitting would deplete the battery in a few weeks without being powered on and this one does not do that.
This is a ham radio that needs a special license in order for you to hit the transmit button on it.
Price
The license costs $35 for 10 years and has no test or other prerequisites.
For the money this is hard to beat.
The price is right with tons of programming options.

Competitiveness
The sound output is really good, especially compared to the smaller radios i've used in the past.
Comparing it to several others within the house, it held up pretty well.
Selecting a similar model (uv-5r) results in a "radio did not respond" error.
The radio is supported on chirp, but you won't see uv-5g plus, so instead use gm-5rh.
