Pros & Cons
Pros
The striker works just fine. It has good edges on the back side from the process of stamping it out from a larger piece of metal. It glues back on with gorilla or any heavy duty glue type.
Flint generates plenty of sparks and the length is perfect. It produces sparks quite well once the outer coating is penetrated. Very good spark too.
This ferro rod is a back up to my lighter and matches anyway. There is a 7/8 x 2 3/4 inch, what appears to be aluminum alloy, striker. They are attached with a cord approximately 10 inches in overall length.
The coghlan's how-to video shows the use of what appears to be a cotton ball as the initial form of tinder. Once scrapped you have dancing bits of glowing metal in your tinder, this is a good thing.
Cons
Coglan's 1005 flint striker is 'not' one that i would depend on for saving my life, if i needed a fire quickly. It makes the same amount of sparks as a generic bic lighter with no fuel. Swedish army starter is a much better choice. Throws lots of spar... Read More
Highlights
Quality
This rod works well with the striker provided or the back of a knife with a good 90 degree spine.
First thing, if you get this, the first thing you need to do is grab your favorite epoxy and secure the handle to the flint.
The handle fell off within 5 minutes of use.
Edit: i am remiss for neglecting those ferro rods that are threaded and screwed into a handle, like ones that are pinned they t... Read More
Price
This is a great fire starter for the price
Excellent price and dang these things work well!
Since this purchase i found a 1/2"x5" ferro rod for less than $8 that i made my own handle for, so that's really my go to now.
It cost twice as much as the coghlan's.
Shipping
**the seller quickly fulfilled my order and it arrived via the post office 2 days ahead of the first target date - in excellent condition.
It arrived on time and works perfectly with my knife!
Packaging/appearance
I've got several of these (probably at least one lashed to every pack or gear item i've got).
Competitiveness
I expect the coghlan's to last 4 times longer than the uberleben.
These beat every other on the retail market.
Wish they did - i trust the coghlan name more than the stores brand.
As a comparison, a uberleben rod recently purchased gives off better sparks than the coghlan's but is already starting to wear ... Read More

I changed it to a single length of cord between the two parts

As with other rods this normally gives enough length to use the striker without removing them from the cord
