The laces go through metal loops as opposed to standard holes making it easier to remove them for washing if need be

Im not sure what its for but im assuming its to run the laces through if need be so they dont drag on the ground

That may be because the boots are made in vietnam though its been my experience things made there tend to run on the smaller side for americans
