Use plumbers putty under the top flange instead of the included poly washer if you want the flange to sit closer to the sink surface and have less likelihood of slight water puddling on the flange after the sink drains

The under sink washer helps to prevent leaks around the outer periphery of the washer but plumbers tape is needed to prevent leaks down the pipe threads on the inner diameter of the washer
