Im not sure why this was an issue for me i clearly lack some common sense but hopefully this review can help someone else realise the cause of their problem if they are doing the same thing

The button needs to be at the rear of the mug such that when drinking the contigo text on the top is the correct way up

Apparently contigo do make a version with a ceramic coating to overcome this problem

You have to push the button to open the spout and keep it pushed whilst drinking

Furthermore contigo has added a lock button on the top of the flask and when this is pressed it is impossible to accidentally open the drinking hole and make a mess
