On its own this is not completely leak proof as it will leak if you do not use a silicone ring that i received with another mason jar purchase that had plastic covers

These fit regular drinking straws not wide straws

The silicone inserts do fall out sometimes but the metal lid edge is not sharp so this doesnt seem to pose a danger
