Pros & Cons
Pros
Immanual kant is one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century. His works include the critique of pure reason and his essay on emmanuel swedenborg's mystical visions. A basic familiarity with plato, aristotle, aquinas, descartes and at least one em... Read More
The critique of pure reason is kant's epistemological and metaphysical work. It is very metaphysic and you better know your vocabulary if your going to understand it. It's a magisterial synthesis of rationalism and empiricism. It cuts the history of p... Read More
Cons
There are *no page numbers* and no indication as to which version of critique (a or b) has been printed. The font size in this version of kant's book is far too small. The reader is simply left to their own devices in order to find this or that passag... Read More
Some key arguments are completely unreadable inasmuch that the grammatical errors make for incomprehensible sentence fragments. It is obvious that kant was lazy and wanted to waste time discussing priori and all things associated and extended from it.... Read More
Highlights
Quality
Easy to read, clear type, legible format.
Great, some sexual violence content, beware, but all the better for it.
A train that - when reading leibniz - is clearly loose, on fire, and heading for a village of small children.
Or, we can take the analytic approach, and blast away like a rabid hobo with a shot gun, seeing wisdom in whatever hits a mark,... Read More
Price
The translation in this edition is up-to-date and in line with the most recent scholarship, and it has the added benefit of bei... Read More
The penguin edition biography of kant, found in the introduction, is worth the price of the book alone.
Shipping
Shipping and handling was on point as expected.
Competitiveness
The most thrilling part is the comparison of reasoning tools used by mathematics and philosophy.
Generally, the analytic thinker will do the latter and the continental thinker the former.
Then i compared it to the kemp smith and realized that the real reason was that the translation was eminently more readable and... Read More

Unlike many great philosophers of the modern period such as descartes leibniz berkeley hobbes locke and hume who were also great prose stylists kants writing tends more to the german scholastic tradition of his predecessors such as wolff who constructed complex deductive metaphysical systems that purported to explain reality as a whole

Like all reputations this myth has a grain of truth kant is an incredibly difficult thinker and at times not a good prose stylist

Yet this is not because kant is somehow incompetent as a thinker or writer kant is by far the greatest philosopher of the modern period and perhaps the greatest western philosopher since plato and aristotle

The problem lies rather in the profound depth of kants insights and thoughts and the sheer difficulty and range of the problems he addresses in the critique

The cpr is the most obscure of kants works and even the best translations dont really do much to dispel the problems caused by kants rather cumbersome style scholastic methodology and often poor choice of concepts to articulate a profound philosophical insight

Many examples could be given but the one i might choose is the table of logical categories kant uses to describe experience or the murky reflections about the a priori nature of mathematical knowledge which still confuses firstclass scholars today

The updated penguin version of the critique has a relatively good introduction and format though i found the way the a and b editions were often lumped together unhelpful and confusing

I also did find the introduction somewhat longwinded and could have helped with some references to modern kant studies or translations
