Pros & Cons
Pros
Tried the bt (balanced tension) strings a few years back and fell in love with them. If you play a d tuning that shifts to a dropped c, these are the strings you need. Big meaty low e string.
Super lights are bright and responsive. They're snappy, but not as annoyingly bright as your typical stainless set. They start out fairly bright (not as much as ss) and gradually settle into a nice balance of clank and beef.
Ease of play is there. But they can be played lightly away from the bridge to get plenty of richness.
But oh my god, these are better! These things are great! Very nice. It makes so much sense, thank you!
This combination evens out the string-to-string tension on all five strings. The e string on 160bt set is 120 which is a bit bigger than expected for a medium gauge. This bass is a frankenbass with:squire affinity p-bodydimarzio dp122 pickupsguitar * ... Read More
Cons
E string is gigantic and will not fit most basses without enlarging the nut slot. Way too bright and zingy for me.
Highlights
Quality
Bass stays in tune most of the time, and the tonal quality is nice, especially for recording.
I don't use a lot of treble, typically, but these sound fine with the upper range set flat, and great when i boost the treble.
I have played my bass with the d'addario lights before which are bright.
I bought ibanez and came with .
Price
The price was right, often less than half of other strings i considered.
A decent set of bass strings for a very low price.
Packaging/appearance
Low end is very clear fresh out of the package and doesn't get muddy like with power slinkys.
Competitiveness
Now, each string has a similar bendiness which i think makes the playing experience more enjoyable.
Have used exl 170s for at least the last 20 years.
(i don't know about in the higher price ranges, since i could never afford them.
