Candice millard is an excellent writer. Millard's prose grips the reader from the first paragraph to the final pages.
Millard recreates the america of 1881 that watched breathlessly until garfield breathed no more. Great narrative about little know president garfield. Great book about garfield and medicine at the end of the century.

The historical figures truly feel like fleshed-out people. Each individual plotline is riveting in its own way.

Millard implies that wild bill hickock was the only lawman in the west. I'm interested in garfield, but i'll see if someone who writes well will come along and do a better job.
