This was used on a cnc plasma cutter the huge electrical noise from the arc was killing the usb link

When charging it generated a large amount of audible interference which i resolved by charging through this adapter

I also have smart battery packs that i data log through a usb interface but the usb device from the cycle tester and the usb device from the data logger cause a ground loop issue where about 12 ma leak out of the battery pack during rest periods where there should be no current flow

Looking through the transparent housing of this device it seem they probably use a type of power converter that isolates the power and ground signals

I cant speak to the data isolation ability as that isnt important to me in this application but the power and ground are certainly isolated and data does make its way through to my computer so thats all i care about
