Rubber coating is to protect the inner bedding. I buy 2-3 sets a year for my two fur babies. One of the dogs is a dirty dog who lived his whole first year plus in a kennel and didn't know he shouldn't go on his bed.

The cover would be zippered closed but would open from the other side of the zipper. This is not waterproof!
