Moisture meters are designed to work in soil only and will not provide a reading in water.
Leave it in the soil between 30-60 seconds, not longer and never more than 5 minutes as this can corrode the probe, which is sensitive.

Did a few tests and its surprising how wrong you can be the top inch or so might be bone dry but below that the earth can be quite wet

Someone mentioned that he put it in a cup of water and it did not register anything so they sent it back as being rubbish

Easy to use good for testing moisture in modern peatfree composts which retain so much water but look dry on the compost surface

Do not under any circumstances submerge the probe in water especially to test if it works as so many reviewers have done
