Used this to successfully connect to the serial port on a beaglebone black sbc.
Appears to be a genuine ftdi chip, and supports ft-prog for programming any custom settings.
After loading ftdi drivers from the web, even worked on a prehistoric winme laptop.

Also make sure that tx pin on the device is connected to rx pin on the target and vice versa

When i spend hours of my time on something i want to know that the hardware is top quality and not cheap rubbish that gives errors
