Adafruit sells a usb to ttl serial cable with the silabs cp2012 chipset that does work. Didn't work. The connectors are so bloated and huge that they don't fit snugly to the pins either.

Do not connect the red wire to anything as it will deliver usb power to the port and fry it

I plugged the usb end into my ubuntu laptop and checked dmesg to find the name of the port which was the default devttyusb0

Then i ran tftp from a prompt on the latop changed to binary transfer and connected to 192

If youre using this as an interface cable for a raspberry pi serial console be warned that txd and rxd wires are switched

That is on every diagram ive seen showing you how to connect your pi to the cable it instructs you to connect the white wire to the txd pin and the green wire to the rxd pin and this should be reversed
