My cigarette lighter powers up when i turn the key to accept and then it take couple of seconds for display to show battery voltage.
Cars no longer have a real gauge this atleast gets you an idea of if charging system is working

It is also reasonably priced and has two usb outlets, an added bonus.
A new alternator was $800 and a new engine controller is $1000 ish.
It give you your alternator out put plus it has two usd ports for any type of device.
It was a $10 wait-and-see monitor versus a pretty expensive repair that i might not need, and was only guess work anyway.

The first number shown is pretty accurate i checked with volt meter direct on battery but then it starts to fall down quickly for some unknown reason it goes from 12
