Pros

This book is not for the faint of heart. Emphasizing the importance of resilience, courage and embracing discomfort. He helps us understand why ensuring pain to develop character strengths such as humility, integrity, and resilience will lead to a mor...  Read More

Each chapter contains a plethora of citations, where the previous book had little to none. Providing advice and wisdom while referencing the greatest philosophers of all time. Although the written style sounds negative and sarcastic, all contents are ...  Read More

Cons

The author spends the majority of the book talking about fixing yourself internally, and does a very poor job of it. The title even confirms authors pessimistic message by stating that everything is f'ed. He concludes (spoiler) that hope is actually c...  Read More

Manson is a blogger and the book reads like a series of random blog posts that never seem to have a point. The most maddening deal with the entire book is manson's insistence that systemic problems aren't real and if you just improve yourself everythi...  Read More

Mark writes as an arrogant all-knowing reality scientist. Then he slyly insults and disrespects those who may disagree.

The opposite of happiness is hopelessness, an endless gray horizon of resignation and indifference. For people who lost purpose and motivation in life, that's not a good medication imho. Do not read or give to anyone needing some uplift in life.

After the first 2 chapters, it gets too repetitive and verbose. Almost each chapter becomes messy, with loooong pages of brainstorming. In my opinion the chapter with emo newton is completely useless.

Quality

Emphasizing the importance of resilience, courage and embracing discomfort.

Manson takes a rather complex subject and, with a remarkable talent for humor and perspective, makes it accessible, i recommend

Minus the language which i can see as a turn off for some, the emphasis is really good.

I love marks approach to grab the readers attention.

This a great dose of reality to get our head out of our a$$.

Manson acknowledges that while we live in an era of unprecedented material abundance there’s a pervasive sense of hopelessness
