It can be enjoyed by the human and dragon fans there are no dragons but they are recognized as part of the realm being portrayed

Ostensibly this is fantasy—set in a renaissance and slightly steampunk world replete with magic elves and dwarves and located high on amazon’s epic fantasy listing

But the story is not fantasy’s classic quest to destroy a magical item or take over an empire or defeat an archdemon the story is a mystery involving a detective and an espionage agent

There are religious orders magical races kings and mindreaders and embittered peasantry with epic wars happening in the background

The trouble is for true fantasy fans these elements feel a little too much like set dressings to really scratch the genre itch the elves and dwarves are very tolkienian the asianish setting and religions feel unimportant to the westernacting main characters and the steampunkmagic elements are not radically integrated into the world
