Michael massing's book spans 2000 years of history and religion without becoming bogged down with minutiae. Massing is a fellow for both the macarthur and leon levy centers for writing. Loved the many mini-biographies.
Erasmus and luther are two of the most influential thinkers of the 16th century. The book alternates between the life of both men and that of luther. It also includes a chapter on jerome and details of his life.
For me, this book not only discusses the complexities of the reformation, but also affirms my faith. He functions as an enthusiastic travel guide for the intelligent, inquisitive person who is not a scholar of the reformation.

The oddest of these negative reviews aside from the one saying the book cant be interesting to anyone who isnt religious to whom i offer my own heathen is the review complaining that michael massing doesnt have a central thesis
