Pros

The story of two men clashing over theological issues is couched in a sprawling, interrelated history of the world, giving the book an impressive expansiveness. Historical background gives great context to a germinal time in religious change. Game of ...  Read More

Michael massing's book spans 2000 years of history and religion without becoming bogged down with minutiae. Massing is a fellow for both the macarthur and leon levy centers for writing. Loved the many mini-biographies.

Erasmus and luther are two of the most influential thinkers of the 16th century. The book alternates between the life of both men and that of luther. It also includes a chapter on jerome and details of his life.

For me, this book not only discusses the complexities of the reformation, but also affirms my faith. He functions as an enthusiastic travel guide for the intelligent, inquisitive person who is not a scholar of the reformation.

The oddest of these negative reviews aside from the one saying the book cant be interesting to anyone who isnt religious to whom i offer my own heathen is the review complaining that michael massing doesnt have a central thesis

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Beginning in about 1350 another expansion of loud criticism of the church and its practices began

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

These critics were brutally suppressed yet the arguments persisted growing more harsh and more open in the next century

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Vboc5wvcnw knb i think this book would be difficult to finish as an ebook

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

But the ebook form would be useful because the index in the hardback anyway is not great

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Because i was reading in chunks and because there is such a huge amount of information sometimes i could not remember a phrase or reference

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

The index was unhelpful in the 3 or 4 instances i needed to use it

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

As a product of catholic schools and jesuit university in the mid20th century i was woefully ignorant about the protestant reformation
