It's entirely possible that the black layer on the filter is a form of carbon. It's not the type of charcoal/carbon that i'm used to seeing on my filters. Anyone who has bred crickets immediately understands what i mean by odor.

These are excellent especially in these dirty dusty times in the arizona desert and my asthma they help keep the air in my house cleaner

I had to change the filter a month early as it plugged up and wasn't enough airflow to keep the furnace running.
Actual size of filter is 1/2 inch smaller in the dimensions of the 14" x 20" that i ordered.

The price is good and the quality is excellent.

There is a lot of debate on what filters to use too thick may put extra strain on hvac system too thin does not keep air clean etc
