Pros & Cons
Pros
Mix and pour into my feeder. At 3 coats and still needs more. Whereas some powdered feeds don't always dissolve nicely, this liquid mixes easily.
Cons
Red dye #40 was originally made from coal tar, but it is now made mostly from petroleum. The amount of red dye consumed by a hummingbird is huge, like you drinking a 10 gallon jug. The dye also stains their excretions red.
Please stop feeding this poison to the fragile humming birds. The nectar now has a strong chemical odor. The manufacturers claim that this eliminates the mess of making your own hummingbird food.
Raw, organic, and natural sugars contain levels of iron that could be harmful.
Red colored food is not good for the hummingbirds. The national audubon society recommends avoiding products with artificial food coloring such as red 40.
