Pros & Cons
Pros
It protects small critters/sand from getting into your impeller. It adds sponge surface area for biological filtration and prevents filter clogs from plant debris.
They last a long time and hold up well to being rinsed and reused. Not the easiest to clean, but still useful. Just squeeze and lightly rinse once a month to keep it from clogging.
Fits perfect. They fit snug and stay on without seeming bulky. Works perfectly on a 10 gallon fishbowl with a fluval 207. Fluval flex and spec aquarium owners love their tanks.
Cons
Item demensions are box and all, including display hanger, not the dimensions of the sponge. The fluval edge sponges are too fine. But clogs up in couple days after cleaning it out. Better to buy the one from aquariumcoop dotcom.
Highlights
Quality
This works perfectly for the fluval c3 filter.
Packaging/appearance
But, packaging and the sponge itself seemed alright so nothing really to say about it.
Great for preventing betta fish and shrimp from getting sucked into the aquaclear filter.
Competitiveness
I have used these as a prefilter on fluval power filters, azoo mignon 60 filters and on a little top fin or aqueon mini tank filter.
Used for my aquaclear 50 since i have small fish.
We have a fluval flex that does not allow to adjust the flow rate on the water spout.
Penguin doesn't make a pre-filter sponge, but one of the reviewers (big thank you!

I read much higher ph levels near the outflow than in other parts of the tank which suggests to me that the sponge was impacting ph

You can buy aftermarket spraybars etc but simply fitting the intake sponge from the fluval edge onto the output nozzle of flex and spec tanks is an easy and cheap way to slow the flow

I thought it would be big enough to fit on the uptake tube of my filter
