That is necessary to program the username and password but thereafter the monitor and mouse are no longer needed as you can then control the device on your windows or mac computer

I took off one star of this review because there is no app for iphone or ipad for this device

Furthermore the online description on foscams website lists that the nvr includes a usb mouse ir cable and a network cable but neither came with my purchase
