Blades are not overly sharp so it takes a good rap on it with the heal of your fist to initially set the blades but once you do that a two handed hard push moves them smoothly thru the whole potato or what ever your cutting

One downside it that your potato cant be too large or too hard

If your potato is too large it obviously wont fit within the cutting area and will either stop you from slicing the potatoes or end up being mashed into mush by the plastic sides
