There will be a burning plastic type smell as it burns off whatever chemicals etc that where used in making the grill

There are also loud ticking and popping noises that i believe to be some sort of thermostat inside so keep in mind it is not quiet

However as this is a small grill it is easy to clean in a sink the fat etc just slides off

Its quite small so if your cooking for more than one person id advise getting the bigger version
