Pros & Cons
Pros
This shovel fits perfectly in a usgi molle e-tool pouch. It digs better than my older collapsible shovel and i am very pleased with the purchase.
For longest possible life, keep checking the screw-collar and keep it snug. It folds down small enough that i can keep it in my car, tucked away in a small emergency box. Does get loose easy but not enough to cause harm. Had to tighten it a bit.
Polymer handle with squarish crisscross outer design. Serrated blade edge is wicked sharp. I like the gerber better because it's more ergonomic.
This is only the second gerber product i have ever owned that is made in america. Great design, not outsourced to china.
Cons
The hinge at the shovel head is very weak and it makes the product worthless for even a mediocre garden tool. The shovel could be used as a mallet for pounding tent stakes simply by folding the shovel against the handle.
Only thing i like about this product is the pouch. Lasted 1 year. Maybe it needs better lubrication or a redesign. Threw the gorge into the junk bin and used the pouch for fire tender.
Highlights
Quality
Very sturdy, like how it folds up to a compact size.
It is sturdy and works great, as an emergency shovel.
Handle is made of plastic, but i don't see it failing any time soon.
This is only the second gerber product i have ever owned that is made in america.
Price
This was a great find and great price.
At this price, i wouldn't buy it.
Nothing chinese-cheap about this but it doesn't include a case as it should at this price.
I picked up a cover at the army surplus store for $9 and am set.
Packaging/appearance
The gerber e-tool came in a cardboard box with 2 small slips of paper in it.
Handle with gloves to protect from sharp edges especially serration areas, packed in an ordinary untaped cardboard box labeled,... Read More
Competitiveness
Appears easier to handle than its predecessors "ames" or "lhb" aluminium bar handle design.
Just like the marine corps one, but better.
Compared to my hardware store shovel it's heavy, i've never tried out the cold steel shovel but i think it's a little bit heavi... Read More
