At first i thought the pole was warping & was going to return it, but it had more to do with the base needing more support.

I sank all the screws down thru the 2x8 flush, leaving the remaining 1/2 ready to go.

My fix for this was as follows: grab a 2x8 or 2x10 and cut it down to about a 4' length.
