The previous lamp's switch quit working after about a year.
The thin cord is permanently attached, and carries low-voltagedc (really likely (^ ^) ) that comes from a nice little converter/plug.
Price
This was on sale (<$4, iirc) just once at our local shaw's.
Some are costly, but prices look fair.

Its quite bright but the designer had the common sense to add a diffuser so the bare led doesnt risk burning your retina
